Oracle of Oddities: Everything you need to know

The Oracle of Oddities has undergone a makeover and will be one large oracle deck, consisting of new and old cards blended together.

I have put together this FAQ for you to read to get a full understanding of the changes, and how the preorder will operate.

About the original project

If you’re familiar with the deck, it first came out in early 2016 and was released in three editions. At the time, I intended each one to be a limited print run. Back then, I could’ve never anticipated the demand for the deck, and in order to prevent extreme price gouging and bootlegging, I decided to reopen orders to the public.

Fast forward ten years later, and I decided to revisit this deck and craft it into something new.

Why not just rerelease the originals again?

I first began working on the Oddities series a decade ago. Not only has my art grown and changed, so has the oracle deck world, and so have all the steps it takes to create and print a deck. I had only been making decks for a little over a year when the first edition came out. I never imagined in my wildest dreams that it would be received the way it has (that can be said for all my work). And while I loved making the second and third editions, I also believe this deck deserves new life.

Is it just the same cards?

Yes and no. The Oracle of Oddities will have some of the original designs, but it will also have redesigns and entirely new cards too.

What are the preorder details?

I do want to preface this by saying that preorders rarely run on schedule. If we’ve learned anything from the pandemic, it’s that supply chain issues can crop up at any time. Not to mention there have been mail strikes in Canada and tariff issues around the world.

The plan is for the preorder to run from May 28th, 2025, until August 15th, 2025. If all goes well, the decks would be ordered in September and arrive before Christmas. However, like I said, none of these dates are set in stone.

Why should I preorder? Why not just wait until the deck arrives in Canada?

The blunt way of putting this is, if there aren’t enough preorders, there will be no deck arriving in Canada. Of course, preordering isn’t mandatory, but they are what fund the printing of the deck. Preorders also have additional benefits such as getting the best price and ensuring you actually get a copy. Nothing feels worse than hearing about a deck and waiting, only for it to sell out before you got one.

What are the specs? What’s the cardstock? How many cards will there be?

I’ve always believed that my decks are sentient creations with their own spirits, and so they will let me know when they are complete. That being said, I am aiming for somewhere in the 60 to 65 card region. If it ends up being more than that, that’s ok with me. As of writing this FAQ, the deck is at about 50 cards. To me, that is close enough to the finish line that it felt right to open the preorder.

One major change is that I will be going with a new printer. They come highly recommended by a variety of people in the deck-making world, and the samples they sent me from decks they’ve printed were lovely.

The cardstock I have decided on is matte lamination at either 300gsm or 350gsm (leaning heavily towards the latter).

It will also have a two-piece rigid box.

Is there a booklet?

The beauty of Oracle of Oddities is that you don’t need a guidebook to work with it. The deck is keyword-based, which makes it very intuitive.

I have the older editions. Can I just buy the new cards?

Unfortunately, no. Because I am using a new printer, they will not match cardstock-wise, not to mention the backs have a new design.

Are you planning expansion packs for Oddities?

While it was the Memento Mori Oracle expansion packs that started this trend in the deck-making world, I don’t have any planned for Oracle of Oddities. They aren’t off the table — nothing ever is when it comes to art — but they aren’t on the table either.

Ok, I’m convinced. Where can I purchase?

The preorder goes live on May 28th around 3:00 p.m. EDT. You can use this link here.
